| Welcome to AP Language & Composition! This course is radically different from any high school English course. During this year, we will analyze various non-fiction texts, speeches, documentaries, commercials, etc. with the goal of establishing a foundation for the analysis and creation of rhetoric. This is imperative in this culture, where you are inundated by messages from advertisers, politicians, the government, the school system, and multiple other sources, all of whom are trying to get you to "do" or "believe" something. This course, if successful, will give you the means for getting past the rhetoric and arriving at the truth; thereby, you may have enough information to decide what you believe, where you are going, and whom you will follow to get there. This course may challenge some of your presuppositions about your own ability to think for yourselves, but, if you are open-minded, this is guaranteed to be a valuable experience! Homework Jane Eyre:

In hearing about these schools that are able to watch their students through the webcams of laptops, I think most of us feel that this is just a strange story of other schools that most of us have never heard of. But it is happening at Lenape. I was talking with a teacher and this teacher informed me that any computer in the school can be watched with a certain program. This program is able to show the windows that are open and clickable on the blue bar at the bottom (this is why no student computer has the option of "New Tab," they cannot see different tabs). Though it's not as extreme as physically watching the student through the webcam (which the school may be doing for every laptop in Lenape has a webcam), I still feel that this is slightly creepy.

I spoke to a fiend of mine from Lower Merion who goes to the school and she said the following: “The kid who was ‘spied on’ was on house arrest and was not allowed to bring his laptop home. When asked where it was, he said it was stolen so the school, following procedure, looked through the camera to find where it was. When they peered through the camera they found him doing pot and selling drugs. I [the friend] am personally very upset that the school is getting so much negative hype over this. Yes they looked through the camera at him, but it was with reasonable suspicion and he said the laptop was stolen. I do not feel sorry for the kid at all”
